The typical American exceeds the recommended daily intake amount in all major food categories, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Add in the daily stresses of work, school, and other obligations, and it can be easy to resort to non-nutritious options. Here are a few ways you can stay on top of your diet (and budget!).

Shop in-season

Before you head to the grocery store, do some research on what types of produce are in-season in your region. Stores will increase their prices for off-season produce. As a general rule of thumb, grains (like corn and barley) are best in June-August in the northeast. Root vegetables (like carrots and beets) are best during the fall months, generally September-November. Start with produce and plan your meals around what's in-season!

Buy in bulk

Some stores will allow you to bring your own Tupperware for some items, like grains and beans. Buying in large quantities and having a surplus in your pantry will ensure that you don't turn to takeout when you're out of meal ideas.

The closer to the ground, the better!

It might seem obvious, but the more processing a food product goes through, the worse it is for your health overall. If you don't have the money to eat 100% organic, try incorporating one or two organic (or low-processed) foods into your meals.

Write a menu for the week

Having a plan for the week will ensure that you stay on track with your diet and make it easier to keep track of your grocery budget. Try this free Google Sheets template and keep it handy during your shopping trip. Not sure where to start with planning your meals? Make sure it has at least one of the following:

  • A protein - lean meats, fish, and/or eggs

  • A produce - especially leafy greens

  • A grain - pasta, rice, quinoa, etc

  • Spices for flavor and zest

  • Healthy fats and oils for cooking

Before embarking on your clean eating journey, be sure to consult with a medical professional. Good luck, and have fun!
